Healthy New Year 2018!

~ Dry January ~

It’s hard to believe another year has come and gone. As a lover of change I tend to get excited at the start of the New Year. I like to reflect on all that has occurred for me during the past year and to think of the changes I would like to make.   So, I am definitely one of those people who likes to start the year off with a New Year’s Resolution. My goals tend to be short term in nature so I can observe and measure real changes. And no, I don’t feel like a failure if I don’t keep up rigidly with changes for the whole year. I tend to think of my changes as experimental. This way I can allow myself to self-correct as I go along. I find that small, incremental changes can lead to lasting growth. I aim high, but don’t agonize over any lack of perfection. Instead I embrace my perfect imperfections.

This January my partner Marco, our Italian friends Giampaolo and Luisa and I will be repeating Dry January for the third year in a row. Dry January is a practice, which originated in the UK where individuals spend the month of January without alcohol. Marco and I have had very satisfying results with giving up alcohol during for the full 31 days. I remember feeling especially well at the end of the month after our first go. We have also found some real lasting effects, one being a lower set point for alcohol consumption. Where we used to drink an entire bottle between us on a Saturday night, now we might drink one half bottle, at most. This year we will be practicing Dry January again, but this time we will focus on cleansing tips.

Make Dry January Fun! Here are some top tips to increase the benefits of no alcohol while self-nurturing and replacing old habits with new ones for a healthier start to the New Year. It doesn’t have to be drudgery and it really can be invigorating.

  • Start each day with warm lemon water. This is a great liver and kidney tonic.
  • Replace that glass of wine with a cleansing mixed fruit and veggie juice. You can enjoy this throughout the week as another great liver and kidney detoxification drink.
  • Include warm and comforting beverages like Orzo or a decaffeinated tea or tisane.
  • Gentle Dry Body Brushing allows your skin to breathe. As your body’s largest organ it is a major source for detoxification.
  • And finally, go for nature walks on the weekend and enjoy some sun if your climate allows.

Now best wishes for the New Year. I’m going to have a delicious glass of Chianti.  Santé, Salute & Cheers!
